This philosophy guides everything Georgie creates, from her bold use of colour to the infectious joy that radiates from each canvas.
Her colourful and joyful paintings are inspired by the things she loves: music, the sea, still life and a sense of the "aliveness" of things. She works mostly in acrylic, charcoal and canvas and paints from her studio gallery in Ramsbury, Wiltshire where she lives with her husband artist Philip Shaw, and daughters Margot and Rosebud.
Her work reflects her love of colour, the wild and ancient parts of the UK, as well as a mild obsession for the coast, flowers, pottery and jugs. Amongst many others, she is inspired by Bernard Cathelin, Jo Vollers, and the blues of Matisse and Somerset potter George Bronwin.
Her film work was first exhibited in Jordan, London and New York as part of the project and book "Offscreen: Four Young Artists in the Middle East" (Booth Clibborn Editions) and she has travelled extensively since making documentary films for the BBC and Al Jazeera amongst others.
Artistic Journey
Georgie's path to painting has been shaped by a rich and varied early career. She first studied Chemistry and Computer Science as an undergraduate, before turning to documentary filmmaking. Throughout her twenties, she travelled extensively, making films for the BBC and Al Jazeera. Those years, spent observing people and places across the world, refined her sensitivity to light, atmosphere and the subtle details that now inform her painting practice.
She co-authored the book Offscreen: Four Young Artists in the Middle East with writer Henry Hemming and artists Al Braithwaite and Stephen Stapleton, documenting a year-long journey across the Middle East in 2002-03.
Inspirations
Colour is at the heart of everything Georgie does. She draws inspiration from the ancient landscape of Wiltshire, the shifting moods of the British coast, the bold simplicity of a vase of flowers, and the warmth of a well-loved home. Artists such as Bernard Cathelin, Jo Vollers, and the luminous blues of Matisse all echo through her work, alongside the earthy tones of Somerset potter George Bronwin.
Music plays a huge role in Georgie's work, and is an integral part of the painting process. Whether it's setting the mood before she picks up a brush or carrying her through a piece, music and painting are inseparable for her — each feeding the other in a way that's hard to explain but impossible to ignore.

A Note to Collectors
